What is Alibaba MaxCompute

Alibaba MaxCompute is a cloud-based data warehouse and big data processing service on Alibaba Cloud. It supports large-scale SQL analytics and batch processing for data warehousing, reporting, and offline ETL workloads. The product targets organizations running analytics on Alibaba Cloud and integrates with the broader Alibaba Cloud data platform for ingestion, governance, and downstream consumption.

pros

Large-scale SQL analytics

MaxCompute provides a managed environment for running SQL-based analytics over very large datasets. It is designed for batch-oriented processing and data warehouse-style workloads where throughput and parallelism matter. This makes it suitable for periodic reporting, offline feature generation, and large ETL jobs.

Managed cloud operations

As a managed service, MaxCompute reduces the need to provision and maintain cluster infrastructure. Alibaba Cloud handles core service operations such as scaling and platform maintenance. This can simplify operations compared with self-managed big data stacks for teams that primarily need SQL processing.

Alibaba Cloud ecosystem integration

MaxCompute is built to work within Alibaba Cloud’s data and analytics ecosystem. It commonly connects with Alibaba Cloud services for data ingestion, workflow scheduling, and BI/analytics consumption. For organizations standardized on Alibaba Cloud, this can reduce integration effort versus assembling multiple third-party components.

cons

Cloud and vendor dependence

MaxCompute is tightly coupled to Alibaba Cloud, which can increase switching costs for organizations that later move to a different cloud or adopt a multi-cloud strategy. Data movement out of the platform can require additional services and planning. This dependence may be a constraint for teams that need portability across environments.

Not optimized for OLTP

MaxCompute is primarily oriented toward analytical and batch processing rather than high-concurrency transactional workloads. Applications that require low-latency row-level reads/writes and strict transactional patterns typically need a separate operational database. Using it as a general-purpose database can lead to architectural mismatches.

Learning curve and tooling fit

Teams may need to learn MaxCompute-specific concepts, operational practices, and integration patterns within Alibaba Cloud. Existing pipelines and governance processes may require adaptation to the platform’s interfaces and supported tooling. This can add onboarding time compared with environments already standardized on other analytics stacks.

Plan & Pricing

Pricing model: Mixed (Subscription and Pay-as-you-go)

Subscription (pre-paid)

  • Resource unit: 1 CU = 4 GB memory + 1 CPU.
  • Price: 1 CU = $22.00 per CU/month (Standard computing resources). Multi-zone HA computing resources: $28.60 per CU/month. Discounts apply for multi-year subscriptions (e.g., 1 yr 15%, 2 yr 30%, 3 yr 50%, 4 yr 60%, 5 yr 65%).

Pay-as-you-go (post-paid) — computing

  • Elastically reserved CU (hourly): $0.0488 USD per CU/hour.
  • MCQA jobs (pay-as-you-go by data processed): $0.0438 USD per GB (MCQA job unit price).
  • MaxFrame (pay-as-you-go compute): $0.0541 USD per compute-hour (standard MaxFrame job rate).

Storage (pay-as-you-go)

  • Multi-zone standard storage: $0.00078 USD/GB/day.
  • Multi-zone long-term storage: $0.000221 USD/GB/day; access fee for long-term storage: $0.080793 USD/GB.
  • Single-zone long-term storage: $0.00017 USD/GB/day.
  • Single-zone standard storage: (If actual storage ≤ 1 GB, data storage is free of charge.)
  • Backup storage: default automatic 1-day retention is free; retention >1 day: $0.0006 USD/GB/day.

Data transfer / data transfer service (hourly for additional resources)

  • Hourly data transfer service (elastic slots): China regions: $0.023 USD/slot/hour. HK/Singapore/Indonesia/US (Virginia): $0.037 USD/slot/hour.

Example/estimation guidance (from official docs)

  • Subscription (compute-intensive): 160 CUs (example) ≈ $3,768 per month.
  • Subscription (storage-intensive): ~50 CUs (example) ≈ $1,177.50 per month.
  • Pay-as-you-go estimate for processing 1 TB (SQL complexity=1) ≈ $47.1 per day, ≈ $1,413 per month.

Notes & caveats

  • MaxCompute supports both subscription (reserved CUs) and pay-as-you-go billing; different job types (SQL/MapReduce/Spark/MCQA/MaxFrame/etc.) have different billing units and rates.
  • Some legacy/managed storage subscription plans were discontinued for new purchases (discontinued Oct 31, 2023).
