What is Red Hat Openshift Data Foundation

OpenShift dependency

ODF is primarily intended for Red Hat OpenShift and is not a general-purpose storage platform for heterogeneous Kubernetes distributions. This can increase complexity compared with using a standalone object storage service that is independent of the container platform.

Operational complexity at scale

Running software-defined storage inside Kubernetes introduces operational considerations such as capacity planning, failure domain design, and performance tuning. Teams may need storage expertise in addition to Kubernetes administration to operate it reliably at scale. This can be more involved than consuming fully managed cloud storage offerings.

Resource and hardware requirements

ODF typically requires dedicated cluster resources (CPU, memory, and storage devices) and benefits from careful hardware selection to meet performance and resiliency goals. In smaller clusters, the overhead of running storage services can be significant relative to application workloads. Hardware constraints can limit achievable throughput and latency compared with specialized external storage systems.
