What is Alibaba Log Service

Alibaba Log Service (also known as Simple Log Service, SLS) is a managed cloud service for collecting, storing, searching, and analyzing logs and machine data. It is used by DevOps/SRE, security, and application teams for observability, troubleshooting, audit analysis, and operational monitoring. The service combines log ingestion, indexing, query/analytics, dashboards, and alerting, and integrates closely with Alibaba Cloud services and common log shippers.

pros

Managed log ingestion and search

The product provides end-to-end log collection, indexing, and search as a managed service, reducing the need to operate and scale a self-managed log stack. It supports near-real-time ingestion and interactive querying for troubleshooting and operational analysis. This model can simplify day-2 operations compared with deployments that require users to manage clusters and storage.

Built-in dashboards and alerting

Alibaba Log Service includes visualization and alerting capabilities that support operational monitoring workflows. Teams can build dashboards from log queries and configure alerts for patterns, thresholds, and anomalies in log-derived metrics. This reduces reliance on separate tools for basic log-to-dashboard and log-to-alert pipelines.

Alibaba Cloud ecosystem integration

The service integrates with Alibaba Cloud infrastructure and application services, which can streamline onboarding for workloads already running on that platform. It supports common collection agents and APIs for ingesting logs from compute, containers, and applications. These integrations can reduce engineering effort for data routing, authentication, and operational access controls within the same cloud environment.

cons

Cloud and region dependency

Alibaba Log Service is primarily designed for Alibaba Cloud, so organizations running multi-cloud or on-prem environments may face additional integration work. Data residency and latency considerations can also constrain which regions are practical for centralized logging. Migrating large historical log datasets between providers can be time-consuming and costly.

Query and feature portability limits

Queries, dashboards, and alert definitions are typically specific to the service’s query language and configuration model. This can make it harder to reuse content across different log analytics platforms or to switch providers without rework. Teams may need to invest in abstraction layers or export pipelines to improve portability.

Cost management requires governance

As with most managed log analytics services, costs can grow with ingestion volume, indexing choices, retention periods, and query frequency. Without controls such as sampling, filtering, tiered retention, and access governance, spend can become difficult to predict. FinOps practices and usage monitoring are often necessary for large-scale deployments.

Plan & Pricing

Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go (usage-based). Alibaba Log Service (Simple Log Service) also supports a pay-by-feature (original) billing mode and prepaid Resource Plans.

Free tier / quotas: 30-day free storage period for ingested data (pay-by-ingested-data mode); per-month free quotas under pay-by-feature (e.g., 500 MB/month for certain billable items) and free shard-days (31 shard-days/month) as documented.

Example costs / unit prices (official):

  • Raw ingested data (pay-by-ingested-data): $0.061 per GB.
  • Storage (hot): $0.002875 per GB·day.
  • IA (Infrequent Access) storage: $0.000762 per GB·day.
  • Archive storage: $0.00026 per GB·day.
  • Read traffic from the Internet: $0.20 per GB.
  • Transfer acceleration: $0.1935 per GB.
  • Ingest Processor / AI Compute: $0.0232 per GB.

(Pay-by-feature / original mode example prices)

  • Read and write traffic: $0.045 per GB (free quota: 500 MB/month when applicable).
  • Index traffic (log data): $0.0875 per GB (free quota: 500 MB/month when applicable).
  • Time-series data storage: $0.00048 per GB·day.

Other billable items noted in official docs: active shard rental fees (shard-day), index storage, metricstore/query-specification differences, Internet read traffic, data transformation and shipping traffic. Resource plans (prepaid) convert to Capacity Units (CUs) allowing discounts compared with pay-as-you-go in many scenarios (see resource-plan examples in official billing docs).

Discount options / cost-savings: Prepaid Resource Plans (1-year subscriptions) that convert to Capacity Units; tiered discounts for large flow-log volumes (tiered per-GB pricing for flow log generation); volume/commitment savings illustrated in billing examples on the official site.

Notes / limitations: Actual prices shown on the Alibaba Cloud buy/console page may vary by region and currency; official docs state "The following prices are for reference only. The actual prices are displayed on the buy page."
