What is Argent
Argent is a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet focused on Ethereum and Layer-2 networks, designed for individuals who want to store, send, and interact with decentralized applications. It uses a smart-contract wallet model with features such as social recovery and configurable security controls rather than a single seed-phrase-only workflow. The product targets users who transact on-chain and want built-in support for DeFi and NFT use cases through wallet connections and in-app integrations.
Smart-contract wallet security model
Argent uses a smart-contract wallet architecture that can support account-level controls such as daily transfer limits, whitelists, and recovery mechanisms. This approach can reduce reliance on a single seed phrase as the only recovery method. It also enables policy-like controls that are harder to implement in basic externally owned account (EOA) wallets.
Layer-2 support for lower fees
Argent supports Ethereum scaling networks (commonly used Layer-2s), which can reduce transaction fees and improve confirmation times compared with mainnet-only usage. This is practical for frequent on-chain actions such as swaps, lending interactions, and NFT activity. For users who primarily operate on supported L2s, it can simplify routine transactions.
User-focused recovery options
Argent is known for recovery workflows such as guardians/social recovery, which can help users regain access without relying solely on a seed phrase. These options can be easier to operationalize for non-technical users and for people managing wallets across multiple devices. The recovery design also supports scenarios where a device is lost or replaced.
Network and ecosystem constraints
Argent’s experience is strongest on Ethereum and selected Layer-2 networks; users needing broad multi-chain coverage may require additional wallets. Asset support and dApp compatibility can vary by network and by wallet-connection method. This can add complexity for users who regularly move across multiple blockchains.
Smart-contract wallet trade-offs
Smart-contract wallets can introduce compatibility limitations with some dApps, signing flows, or third-party services that assume an EOA. Certain on-chain actions may require additional steps (for example, contract deployment or specific transaction patterns), depending on the network and account state. Users should also consider smart-contract risk as part of their threat model.
Not a full custody platform
Argent is primarily a self-custodial wallet rather than an institutional custody, treasury, or exchange platform. Organizations needing role-based approvals, audit workflows, and operational controls across many wallets may find it insufficient without additional tooling. Support expectations and service-level commitments may differ from enterprise-focused custody providers.
Plan & Pricing
Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go Free tier/trial: Free wallet app to download and use (no subscription). No time-limited trial listed on official site.
Example costs:
- Wallet creation / on-chain actions: Ethereum network fees (gas) — variable and paid by the user; Argent states gas is paid to the network and is not profited from by Argent. (Variable per network conditions).
- Crypto-to-crypto swaps (in-app): 0.5% exchange fee (split: Argent 85% / Paraswap 15%) + network (gas) fees.
- Fiat-to-crypto purchases (in-app): Fees are charged by third-party on-ramp providers (e.g., Ramp, MoonPay, Banxa, Topper); Argent states it does not currently charge a fee for fiat-to-crypto purchases.
- Argent Fee: Argent may charge an additional "Argent Fee" for certain transactions routed through third-party crypto platforms; such fees (and amounts) are shown before confirmation.
- Argent Card (optional): Argent Metal Card — 120 USDC for the first year (paid upfront) for the first release. Argent Lite Card — free card, one-time shipping fee of $6.99. Card ATM allowances and ATM fee policy noted (fee-free allowances and 2% fee beyond limits).
Discount options: No volume/commitment discounts or subscription tiers are listed on the official site; fees are primarily per-transaction or via third-party providers.
Notes / Key features:
- Argent does not profit from network (gas) fees; network fees go to blockchain validators.
- Many fee amounts are variable (network gas) or depend on third-party providers (fiat on-ramps), so Argent shows fees in-app before confirmation.
