What is Buildkite
Buildkite is a CI/CD platform that runs build and test pipelines on customer-managed infrastructure while using a hosted control plane for orchestration and visibility. It targets software engineering teams that need to integrate CI with existing cloud, on-prem, or hybrid environments and keep build execution within their own networks. Pipelines are defined as code (YAML) and can be extended through plugins and integrations with common version control and chat/incident tools.
Runs on your own infrastructure
Buildkite executes jobs on self-hosted agents, which lets teams keep source code, artifacts, and build execution inside their own cloud accounts or data centers. This model supports network isolation, custom machine images, and access to internal dependencies without complex tunneling. It can be a fit for organizations with strict security, compliance, or data residency requirements.
Flexible pipelines as code
Pipelines are configured in YAML and support conditional logic, parallelism, and multi-step workflows. Teams can version pipeline definitions alongside application code and review changes through standard code review processes. The approach supports diverse build systems and languages without forcing a single deployment model.
Extensible plugin ecosystem
Buildkite supports a plugin mechanism that standardizes common tasks such as caching, artifact handling, and integrations. This reduces repeated scripting across repositories and helps teams share reusable pipeline components. The platform also integrates with common SCM providers and notification tools to fit into existing developer workflows.
Operational overhead for agents
Because builds run on customer-managed agents, teams must provision, patch, scale, and monitor the worker fleet. Capacity planning and cost control become the customer’s responsibility, especially for bursty workloads. Organizations without mature infrastructure automation may find setup and ongoing maintenance time-consuming.
Not a full CD platform
Buildkite focuses primarily on CI and pipeline orchestration rather than providing an end-to-end continuous delivery suite with advanced deployment governance. Teams often need additional tooling for release orchestration, progressive delivery, and environment management. This can increase integration work for organizations seeking a single platform for build through production rollout.
Complexity at large scale
Large organizations may need to invest in standardization (shared plugins, templates, and conventions) to keep pipelines consistent across many teams. Managing secrets, artifact storage, and cross-account networking can add architectural complexity in multi-cloud or segmented environments. Troubleshooting can span both the hosted control plane and the customer’s infrastructure.
