What is FileZilla
FileZilla is an open-source FTP client used to transfer files between a local machine and remote servers over FTP, FTPS, and SFTP. It targets IT staff, developers, and administrators who need interactive file transfer, site management, and basic transfer automation from a desktop UI. The product focuses on client-side connectivity and session management rather than managed file transfer workflows or server-side governance. FileZilla also offers a separate paid “Pro” client build that adds connectors for several cloud storage providers.
Broad protocol support
FileZilla supports FTP, FTP over TLS (FTPS), and SFTP, covering common secure and legacy transfer needs. It includes features such as site profiles, transfer queues, resume support, and directory comparison for interactive operations. This makes it suitable for day-to-day administrative transfers and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
Cross-platform desktop client
FileZilla Client runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, which helps standardize tooling across mixed environments. The UI provides bookmarks/site manager, logging, and configurable transfer settings that are useful for repeatable operations. Compared with server-centric products in the space, it is lightweight to deploy because it is a local client application.
Open-source availability
The FileZilla Client codebase is available as open source, enabling inspection and community contributions. Organizations can adopt it without per-user licensing for the open-source edition. This can be advantageous for teams that need a basic, auditable FTP/SFTP client rather than a full managed file transfer platform.
Not a managed file transfer platform
FileZilla is primarily an interactive client and does not provide centralized policy enforcement, workflow orchestration, or enterprise-grade auditing typical of managed file transfer suites. It lacks built-in capabilities for approvals, partner onboarding portals, and end-to-end transfer governance. Organizations needing compliance reporting and centralized administration generally require additional tooling.
Limited integration and automation
FileZilla focuses on manual and semi-automated transfers from a desktop UI rather than API-first integration. It does not function as a data integration tool for mapping, transformation, or event-driven pipelines. Automation options are comparatively limited versus products designed for scheduled, server-side, multi-endpoint transfer jobs.
Client-side credential management risks
Because it is installed on endpoints, security posture depends on local device controls and user practices. Saved site configurations and credentials can increase risk if endpoints are not properly secured or if configuration files are mishandled. Centralized secrets management and role-based access controls are not core strengths of a desktop FTP client.
