What is IBM Cloudant
IBM Cloudant is a managed document database service based on Apache CouchDB, designed to store and query JSON documents via HTTP APIs. It is used by application teams that need a cloud-hosted NoSQL database with replication and offline/sync-friendly patterns. Cloudant emphasizes multi-region replication options, change feeds, and CouchDB-compatible tooling for document-centric workloads. It is offered as a service on IBM Cloud, with operational tasks such as provisioning and patching handled by the provider.
CouchDB-compatible document model
Cloudant uses a JSON document model and exposes CouchDB-style HTTP APIs, which supports common document-database application patterns. This can reduce migration effort for teams already using CouchDB-compatible libraries and data formats. It also supports change feeds that applications can consume for event-driven processing and synchronization workflows.
Built-in replication capabilities
Cloudant includes replication features aligned with CouchDB replication concepts, enabling database-to-database synchronization across environments. This supports use cases such as multi-site availability, edge/offline synchronization patterns, and data movement between instances. Replication is a core capability rather than an add-on component that must be assembled separately.
Managed DBaaS operations
As a DBaaS, Cloudant offloads routine database administration tasks such as provisioning and service management to IBM Cloud. This can simplify operations for teams that do not want to run and patch their own CouchDB-compatible clusters. It also fits organizations standardizing on IBM Cloud governance, identity, and billing.
Query model has constraints
Cloudant’s query approach is oriented around document retrieval, secondary indexes, and map/reduce-style views rather than full relational querying. Workloads that require complex joins, multi-entity transactions, or heavy ad hoc analytics may need additional systems or data pipelines. Teams often must model data carefully to avoid inefficient access patterns.
Ecosystem is IBM Cloud-centric
Cloudant is delivered as an IBM Cloud service, which can increase coupling to IBM Cloud operational tooling and service boundaries. Organizations pursuing a single control plane across multiple clouds may find portability more complex than self-managed alternatives. Network egress, identity integration, and service limits can also influence architecture decisions.
Not optimized for search/analytics
Cloudant is primarily a transactional document store and is not designed to replace dedicated search engines or analytics platforms. For advanced full-text search, aggregations at scale, or log/observability-style workloads, teams typically integrate separate specialized services. This can add operational complexity and data synchronization overhead.
Plan & Pricing
Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go Free tier/trial:
- Lite plan: 1 GB permanently free (Lite plan).
- IBM Cloud account promotional credit: US$200 cloud credit for 30 days (can be used to try Cloudant).
Example costs (from IBM Cloud documentation / pricing pages):
- Data storage (Standard plan): $1.00 per GB (charged for storage >20 GB; 20 GB of storage is zero-cost on Standard).
- Lookups/second: $0.25 per 100 Lookups/second.
- Writes/second: $0.50 per 50 Writes/second.
- Queries/second: $5.00 per 5 Queries/second.
Other notes:
- Lite plan caps data at 1 GB; when exceeded writes are blocked until upgrade or data reduced.
- Dedicated / Enterprise (Dedicated Hardware) offering is available for single-tenant clusters and is priced based on hardware capacity (contact IBM sales for pricing).
- IBM Cloud provides platform-wide purchasing options (Pay-as-you-go, Subscriptions, Enterprise Savings Plan, Reservations) that can affect effective pricing.
Discount options: Volume/commitment discounts and enterprise plans available via IBM Cloud purchasing programs (Enterprise Savings Plan, reservations, subscription commitments).
