What is Percona XtraDB Cluster (PXC)
Percona XtraDB Cluster (PXC) is an open-source MySQL-compatible clustered database distribution built on Percona Server for MySQL and the Galera replication library. It is used by database administrators and platform teams to run highly available MySQL workloads with synchronous multi-node replication and automatic node state transfer. PXC is typically deployed on-premises or in self-managed cloud environments where teams want MySQL compatibility with built-in clustering rather than a separate database service.
Synchronous multi-node replication
PXC uses Galera-based synchronous replication to keep nodes consistent and to support automatic failover patterns at the application or proxy layer. This design can reduce data loss risk compared with asynchronous replication in many failure scenarios. It fits teams that need high availability while keeping MySQL protocol and tooling compatibility.
MySQL ecosystem compatibility
Because PXC is MySQL-compatible, it works with common MySQL clients, connectors, and administrative workflows. It supports InnoDB/XtraDB storage engine behavior expected by many existing applications. This lowers migration effort compared with adopting a different database model or query dialect.
Self-managed deployment flexibility
PXC can be deployed on commodity infrastructure, virtual machines, containers, and multiple cloud providers without being tied to a single managed service. Teams can control configuration, patching cadence, and topology design to meet internal requirements. This is useful in regulated environments or where data locality and operational control are priorities.
Write scalability constraints
Synchronous replication introduces coordination overhead, so write throughput does not scale linearly as nodes are added. Workloads with high write contention or many cross-node conflicts can see reduced performance. It is generally better suited to high availability and read scaling than to heavy write scaling.
Operational complexity and tuning
Running a healthy cluster requires careful configuration of networking, timeouts, flow control, and node provisioning. Backup/restore, upgrades, and schema changes need planning to avoid cluster instability or long state transfers. Teams often need experienced DBAs/SREs to operate it reliably at scale.
Strict network and latency sensitivity
Because replication is synchronous, cluster performance and stability depend strongly on low-latency, reliable networking between nodes. Wide-area or multi-region deployments can be challenging and may require additional architecture (for example, separate clusters per region). Network partitions can lead to quorum issues and service disruption if not designed carefully.
