What is Tines

Tines is a workflow automation platform used to orchestrate security and IT operations processes across third-party tools and services. It is commonly used by security operations, incident response, and IT teams to automate alert triage, enrichment, ticketing, notifications, and response actions. The product centers on building event-driven workflows (“stories”) that connect APIs and services, with an emphasis on human-in-the-loop steps and auditability for operational processes.

pros

Broad API-based integrations

Tines is designed to connect to many external systems through APIs, webhooks, and common authentication methods. This supports automation across security tooling, ITSM, messaging, and cloud services without requiring a single-vendor stack. The approach fits teams that need to orchestrate workflows across heterogeneous environments.

Human-in-the-loop automation

Workflows can include manual approval, review, and exception-handling steps alongside automated actions. This is useful for incident response and operational processes where controls, segregation of duties, or analyst judgment is required. It also helps teams standardize runbooks while keeping decision points explicit.

Reusable workflow building blocks

Tines workflows are composed of modular actions that can be reused and adapted across different use cases. This supports scaling automation from a few playbooks to a larger library of operational processes. It can reduce duplication when multiple teams automate similar enrichment, routing, and response patterns.

cons

Not a full ITSM suite

Tines focuses on orchestration and automation rather than providing a complete incident management system of record. Organizations typically still need separate tools for ticket lifecycle management, CMDB, and service request workflows. This can add integration and governance work to keep systems synchronized.

Automation requires upkeep

API-driven workflows depend on third-party endpoints, schemas, and authentication that can change over time. Teams should plan for monitoring, versioning, and periodic maintenance of integrations and playbooks. Without ownership and documentation, automation can become brittle as toolsets evolve.

Data integration is operational

While Tines can move and transform data for workflows, it is not primarily a data integration platform for large-scale ELT/ETL, modeling, or analytics pipelines. Organizations with heavy warehouse/lakehouse integration needs may require separate data integration tooling. Using Tines for high-volume data movement can be less appropriate than purpose-built data pipeline systems.
