What is Wasabi Object Storage

Wasabi Object Storage is an S3 API–compatible cloud object storage service used to store and retrieve unstructured data such as backups, media assets, logs, and application data. It targets IT teams, developers, and managed service providers that need cloud storage without operating their own object storage infrastructure. The service emphasizes S3 compatibility for application integration and supports features such as versioning, lifecycle policies, and object immutability for retention use cases. Wasabi operates its own storage regions and is typically consumed via the S3 API, console, and partner integrations.

pros

S3 API compatibility

Wasabi provides an S3-compatible API, which allows many existing tools and applications built for S3 to integrate with minimal changes. This reduces migration effort for backup software, media workflows, and custom applications. It also supports common S3 features such as buckets, access keys, policies, and multipart uploads.

Object immutability options

The service supports object lock/immutability capabilities that help meet retention and tamper-resistance requirements. This is relevant for backup repositories, ransomware recovery designs, and compliance-driven archives. These controls can be combined with versioning and access policies to strengthen data protection workflows.

Broad ecosystem integrations

Wasabi is commonly used through third-party backup, archive, and data management platforms that support S3-compatible targets. This enables organizations to keep their preferred management layer while changing the underlying storage provider. It can simplify adoption compared with platforms that require proprietary APIs or tightly coupled compute services.

cons

Limited native compute services

Wasabi focuses on object storage rather than a full suite of cloud services. Organizations that want tightly integrated compute, serverless, databases, and analytics alongside storage may need additional vendors or platforms. This can increase architectural complexity compared with providers that offer a broader integrated cloud stack.

Region footprint constraints

Wasabi’s available storage regions may be fewer than those of the largest hyperscale providers. This can affect latency-sensitive workloads, data residency requirements, or multi-region designs in certain geographies. Buyers should validate region availability, replication options, and any cross-region data movement considerations for their use case.

Not a full storage manager

While it includes core bucket and access management, Wasabi is not a comprehensive storage management suite for heterogeneous environments. Advanced capabilities such as unified management across multiple storage backends, deep policy orchestration, or end-to-end data governance often require third-party tools. Teams may need separate software for monitoring, classification, and lifecycle governance across systems.

Plan & Pricing

Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go (primary) + Reserved Capacity Storage (RCS) (prepaid/term-based) Free tier/trial: 30-day free trial (1 TB limit). See notes below. Storage price (Pay-as-you-go): $6.99 per TB per month (equivalent to $0.0068 per GB/month). What is included (Pay-as-you-go): Free ingress, free egress (no egress fees), and free API requests (per Wasabi pricing FAQ). Minimums & billing rules (Pay-as-you-go): Minimum monthly charge equals 1 TB of active storage (i.e., if you store <1 TB, you are billed for 1 TB). There is a 90-day minimum storage duration policy (timed-deleted storage charge applies if objects deleted before 90 days). Reserved Capacity Storage (RCS): Capacity is purchased in 1-, 3-, or 5-year terms; discounts increase with larger capacity and longer terms. RCS capacities offered in units (25 TB, 100 TB, 250 TB, 500 TB, 1 PB, 1.5 PB, 5 PB, 10 PB). Pricing for RCS is quote-based: customers must contact sales for exact RCS pricing. (There is also an RCS "capped" option with a 25 TB minimum for 12 months.) Wasabi Cloud NAS (notes): Cloud NAS can be purchased via Pay-as-you-go or RCS. Pay-as-you-go minimum billable storage/month for Cloud NAS is 10 TB; RCS minimum capacity to purchase (standard) is 50 TB / 1-year term (and RCS-Capped has a 25 TB minimum for 12 months). Other fees (example): Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance rental fee: $750 for 30 days (per Wasabi product terms). Discount options: RCS discounts for term length and capacity; larger/longer commitments provide lower $/TB rates. Exact RCS discounts/pricing requires contacting Wasabi Sales and/or requesting a quote. Notes & limits: Trial account: 30-day duration and 1 TB storage limit (trial limit applies to active + deleted storage). Trial can be upgraded to paid by submitting credit card; trial removal of limit occurs upon becoming paid subscriber.
