What is Amazon CloudSearch
Amazon CloudSearch is a managed search service for building search functionality into applications and websites. It provisions and operates search domains, indexes data, and supports common search features such as full-text search, faceting, and filtering. It is typically used by development teams that want to add search to customer-facing or internal applications without operating search infrastructure. The service is configured and managed through AWS APIs and the AWS Management Console.
Fully managed search domains
CloudSearch handles provisioning, patching, and operational management of the search service as an AWS managed offering. This reduces the need for teams to run and maintain their own search clusters. It also supports scaling by adjusting instance types and replication settings within a domain. For organizations already standardized on AWS, it fits common cloud governance and operational patterns.
Core search features included
The service supports full-text search, fielded search, faceting, filtering, and sorting, which covers many enterprise and application search requirements. It provides document and field configuration options to control indexing and query behavior. These capabilities enable common use cases such as product catalogs, knowledge bases, and internal content search. It can be integrated into applications via standard HTTPS requests.
AWS ecosystem integration
CloudSearch integrates with AWS identity and access management, logging/monitoring services, and common AWS data sources through application-level pipelines. Teams can manage access using AWS IAM and align deployments with AWS networking and security controls. This can simplify compliance and operational oversight for AWS-centric environments. It also benefits from AWS regional availability and account-level management.
Limited modern AI search
CloudSearch is primarily oriented around traditional keyword and field-based search. It does not natively provide the breadth of newer AI search capabilities such as vector search, semantic ranking, or built-in retrieval-augmented generation workflows. Teams needing these capabilities often implement additional services and custom pipelines. This can increase solution complexity compared with platforms that package AI search features more directly.
Less flexible than newer options
Compared with more recent managed search offerings, CloudSearch provides a narrower set of configuration and extensibility options for advanced relevance tuning and custom analyzers. Some organizations may find limitations when implementing complex multilingual search, domain-specific ranking, or specialized indexing strategies. Workarounds can require application-side logic or additional processing layers. This may reduce suitability for highly customized enterprise search programs.
AWS-only deployment model
CloudSearch is an AWS service and does not support deployment outside AWS-managed infrastructure. This can be a constraint for organizations with multi-cloud requirements, on-premises constraints, or strict data residency architectures that require non-AWS hosting. Portability is limited because domain configuration and operations are tied to AWS APIs and service constructs. Vendor lock-in considerations may be material for long-term search platform strategy.

- Batch uploads — $0.10 per 1,000 Batch Upload Requests (maximum 5 MB per batch).
- IndexDocuments requests — $0.98 per GB of data stored in your search domain.
- Data transfer — standard AWS data transfer charges apply (per-region AWS data transfer pricing). Discounts / notes: No setup fees or upfront commitments; Multi-AZ provisioning results in charges for additional instance hours; previous-generation instance types are available only for existing domains.
