What is Amazon Pinpoint
Amazon Pinpoint is an AWS service for sending and orchestrating customer communications across channels such as push notifications, SMS, email, and voice, with audience segmentation and campaign/journey workflows. It is used by product, growth, and engineering teams to implement messaging for mobile and web applications and to measure engagement outcomes. The service is delivered as cloud infrastructure with APIs/SDKs and integrates with other AWS services for data ingestion, identity, and event processing.
Multi-channel messaging in one service
Pinpoint supports push notifications, SMS, email, and voice from a single AWS service, which reduces the need to stitch together multiple channel providers. It includes segmentation, templates, and campaign/journey tooling to coordinate messaging across channels. This fits teams that want a unified messaging layer rather than separate point solutions per channel.
Developer-first APIs and SDKs
Pinpoint provides APIs and SDKs that allow engineering teams to embed event collection, endpoints, and messaging triggers directly into applications and backend services. It supports programmatic campaign management and transactional messaging patterns in addition to scheduled campaigns. This approach aligns with teams building custom workflows and integrating messaging into application logic.
Native AWS ecosystem integration
Pinpoint integrates with common AWS building blocks (for example, IAM for access control and other AWS services for data pipelines and event-driven processing). Organizations already standardized on AWS can centralize governance, logging, and deployment practices around the same cloud platform. This can simplify procurement and operational management compared with adopting separate vendors for messaging infrastructure.
Not an ASO intelligence tool
Pinpoint focuses on customer messaging and engagement measurement, not app store optimization or competitive market intelligence. Teams looking for store keyword tracking, competitor benchmarking, or download/revenue estimates typically need separate products. This can make Pinpoint a partial fit when the primary goal is app growth intelligence rather than messaging execution.
AWS-centric operational complexity
Implementing Pinpoint effectively often requires AWS knowledge (IAM policies, service quotas, regional considerations, and integration patterns). For smaller teams, the setup and ongoing operations can be heavier than using a standalone, UI-led messaging platform. The learning curve is most noticeable when building event pipelines and identity models across multiple AWS services.
Channel constraints and deliverability dependencies
Email and SMS performance depends on sender configuration, regulatory requirements, and carrier/provider constraints that sit outside the application layer. Teams may need additional work for compliance (opt-in/opt-out, regional rules) and deliverability management (sender identities, reputation, throughput). These factors can affect rollout timelines and message reach even when the API integration is complete.
Plan & Pricing
Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go
Pricing components (from AWS official Amazon Pinpoint pricing page):
- Monthly Targeted Audience (MTA): First 5,000 endpoints targeted per calendar month are free. $0.0012 per endpoint after the first 5,000. (You don’t pay MTA charges for messages sent using the SendMessages API operation or the Pinpoint SMS and Voice API.)
- Events (application/campaign events): First 100,000,000 events collected per month are free. $0.000001 per event after the first 100,000,000.
- In-app messaging API requests: First 15,000 in-app message API requests per month are free. $0.00011 per request after that.
- Channels (SMS, MMS, push, voice, numbers, phone number validate, OTP): Channel-specific message sending costs are billed via AWS End User Messaging pricing (see official End User Messaging pricing). Email sending is billed via Amazon SES pricing. (Pinpoint pricing page directs to those official channel pricing pages.)
- Deliverability Dashboard (optional): Fixed price of $1,250 per month (includes reputation monitoring for up to 5 domains and 25 predictive email placement tests). Additional domain monitoring: $25 per domain per month. Additional predictive placement tests beyond included 25: $10 per test.
- Dedicated IP addresses for sending email through Pinpoint: $24.95 per dedicated IP address per month.
Free tier / free allowances (per month, ongoing):
- 5,000 free endpoints (MTA)
- 100,000,000 free events
- 15,000 free in-app message API requests
- 1,000,000 free push notifications referenced in pricing examples (channel-specific details are on End User Messaging pricing)
Notes & where to find channel-specific rates:
- For SMS, MMS, push, voice, phone numbers, phone number validation, and OTP pricing, AWS directs customers to the AWS End User Messaging pricing page.
- For email pricing, AWS directs customers to the Amazon SES pricing page.
Pricing examples: AWS provides worked examples on the pricing page demonstrating how MTA, events, and messages sent combine into monthly charges.
