What is Razorpay

Razorpay is a payment gateway and payments platform that helps businesses accept and manage digital payments, primarily in India. It supports use cases such as online checkout, recurring payments, payouts to vendors/partners, and payment links for remote collections. The product is typically used by online businesses, marketplaces, and SaaS companies that need API-based payment acceptance and settlement workflows. It differentiates through a broad set of India-focused payment methods and an integrated suite that extends beyond checkout into payouts and reconciliation.

pros

Broad India payment coverage

Razorpay supports common India payment methods such as UPI, cards, netbanking, and wallets, which helps merchants serve local customer preferences. This reduces the need to stitch together multiple providers for domestic payment coverage. It also supports features like payment links and QR-based collections that fit India-specific payment behaviors.

Developer-friendly APIs and SDKs

Razorpay provides APIs, SDKs, and webhooks for integrating payments into web and mobile applications. This supports custom checkout flows and backend automation for payment capture, refunds, and settlement tracking. The platform also offers tools for testing and integration that are oriented toward engineering teams.

Integrated payouts and reconciliation

Beyond payment acceptance, Razorpay offers payout capabilities for sending funds to bank accounts and other endpoints, supporting marketplace and vendor-payment workflows. It also provides reporting and reconciliation features to help finance teams match payments, refunds, fees, and settlements. This can reduce reliance on separate payout and reconciliation tooling.

cons

Geographic focus on India

Razorpay’s strongest coverage is for India-based businesses and India payment methods. Companies with significant cross-border acquiring needs may require additional providers for local acquiring in other regions. Availability of certain features and payment methods can vary by country and entity type.

Compliance and onboarding requirements

As a regulated payments provider, Razorpay requires KYC/verification and may request additional documentation depending on business model and risk profile. Some categories of merchants can face longer onboarding timelines or restrictions. Ongoing compliance checks can affect account limits, settlement timing, or feature access.

Complexity for simple use cases

The platform includes multiple modules (gateway, subscriptions, payouts, etc.), which can add configuration overhead for small merchants with basic needs. Teams may need time to choose the right components and set up webhooks, reconciliation, and role-based access. For low-volume sellers, the operational setup can feel heavier than simpler checkout-only tools.
