What is Fontstand

Fontstand is a desktop application and online marketplace for discovering, testing, and licensing fonts from independent foundries. It lets designers install fonts temporarily for evaluation and then purchase licenses for ongoing use. The product focuses on try-before-you-buy workflows and direct access to a curated catalog rather than enterprise font governance.

pros

Try-before-you-buy workflow

Fontstand supports time-limited font rentals/trials so users can test fonts in real design files before committing to a full license. This reduces the need to download and manage large numbers of permanent font files during exploration. The workflow is oriented toward individual designers and small teams evaluating type options.

Integrated font discovery and licensing

The app combines font browsing, activation, and purchasing in one place, reducing context switching between a font manager and separate storefronts. Licensing is handled through the platform, which can simplify procurement for independent foundry fonts. This is particularly useful when sourcing fonts outside large enterprise libraries.

Curated independent foundry catalog

Fontstand aggregates fonts from multiple independent type foundries with consistent preview and testing tools. For teams that want alternatives to large corporate libraries, it provides a single interface to access a broad set of boutique typefaces. The catalog focus can help with creative exploration where uniqueness matters.

cons

Not an enterprise governance tool

Fontstand is not primarily designed for enterprise-wide font compliance, auditing, or policy enforcement. Organizations needing centralized license tracking across many endpoints may require additional processes or tools. Administrative controls and reporting are typically more limited than in enterprise-focused font management suites.

Catalog limited to partners

Fontstand’s marketplace model means it mainly covers fonts available through participating foundries. If a team relies heavily on system fonts, large corporate libraries, or internally licensed fonts, Fontstand may not be the single source of truth. Users may still need another manager for non-Fontstand font assets.

Desktop-app dependency

Font activation and usage depend on the Fontstand desktop application being installed and running on user machines. This can add operational overhead in locked-down IT environments or mixed OS fleets. Offline workflows can also be constrained compared with managing locally stored font libraries.

Plan & Pricing

Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go (font rentals) + optional Foundry Subscriptions (monthly)

Font rentals (primary model):

  • Rental price: 10% of the font’s regular retail price per 30-day rental period. Rent-to-own: after renting for twelve 30-day periods (consecutive or non-consecutive) you obtain a permanent license. (Prices are set by each foundry; Fontstand displays VAT where applicable.)
  • Free trial for testing: 3-hour free trial per font (no payment details required; limits apply: any given font can be tried once every 30 days; up to 50 trial fonts in any 24-hour period).
  • Webfonts: Most rentals include up to 10,000 free pageviews per monthly rental; additional packages of 100,000 monthly pageviews are available at 2% of the regular full retail price (described as 20% of the monthly rental price).

Foundry Subscriptions (optional):

  • Model: monthly subscription per participating foundry that unlocks that foundry’s entire available font collection for the subscription period.
  • Free trial: a 7-day free trial is provided the first time you subscribe to a particular foundry; valid payment/billing info is required to start the trial.
  • Pricing: set by each foundry and varies; Fontstand’s communications indicate recommended pricing tiers start at approximately €10 (or USD) per month, but actual monthly subscription prices vary by foundry and are displayed in-app.

Examples & notes:

  • Fontstand’s pricing page uses a price calculator (font family, users, pageviews, currency) to show specific rents/subscription costs per font/foundry (prices are dynamic and set by foundries).
  • Fontstand is not a subscription-only service; rentals are pay-as-you-go (you pay only for fonts you rent).
