What is VeriStand
VeriStand is a real-time test and validation software environment used to configure, run, and monitor hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and real-time simulation test systems. It targets test engineers validating embedded control systems (for example, automotive, aerospace, and industrial control) who need deterministic execution, I/O integration, and automated test workflows. The product focuses on real-time test orchestration, stimulus generation, logging, and integration with real-time targets and measurement hardware rather than system modeling or requirements authoring.
Purpose-built for HIL testing
VeriStand provides a structured environment for configuring real-time test systems, running deterministic test sequences, and monitoring signals during execution. It supports common HIL workflows such as stimulus profiles, alarms, and data logging without requiring users to build a full application from scratch. This makes it well-suited for repeatable validation of embedded controllers and ECUs.
Broad integration with NI stack
VeriStand integrates closely with NI real-time targets and modular I/O hardware, enabling end-to-end setups that combine real-time execution with measurement and control. It also connects with NI’s wider software ecosystem for test development and automation (for example, using complementary tools for code modules and test management). This integration reduces effort when an organization standardizes on NI platforms.
Extensible via models and code
The platform supports extending real-time behavior through custom devices, code modules, and model integration for real-time simulation. Teams can incorporate plant models or custom algorithms into the real-time loop and expose parameters and channels for test control. This flexibility helps adapt the environment to domain-specific rigs and proprietary interfaces.
Not a full MBSE suite
VeriStand does not primarily address core MBSE activities such as SysML-based architecture modeling, requirements management, or end-to-end traceability across lifecycle artifacts. Organizations typically need separate tools for system modeling and requirements workflows. As a result, it fits best as a downstream validation environment rather than a central systems engineering repository.
NI ecosystem dependency
Many deployments rely on NI real-time hardware and related drivers, which can limit portability to heterogeneous lab environments. Integrating non-NI hardware may require additional engineering effort, custom development, or middleware depending on the interface. This can increase total cost and complexity for organizations with mixed vendor test benches.
Setup and maintenance complexity
Real-time test systems often require careful configuration of timing, I/O mapping, calibration, and deployment to targets, which can create a learning curve. Managing versions across models, code modules, and hardware drivers can also be operationally demanding. Teams may need specialized expertise to build robust, maintainable test frameworks at scale.
