What is Afternic

Afternic is a domain aftermarket platform used to list, buy, and sell registered domain names, with distribution through participating registrars and resellers. It is primarily used by domain investors, businesses seeking a specific name, and agencies sourcing domains for clients. The product focuses on secondary-market transactions (including fixed-price “buy now” listings and broker-assisted sales) rather than first-time domain registration.

pros

Large reseller distribution network

Afternic listings can be syndicated to a network of registrar and reseller storefronts, which can increase exposure beyond a single marketplace. This is useful for sellers who want broader reach without managing multiple listings across different sites. For buyers, it can make aftermarket domains discoverable during a typical domain search flow at participating registrars.

Fast-transfer fulfillment options

Afternic supports “Fast Transfer” for eligible domains at participating registrars, enabling streamlined ownership transfer after purchase. This reduces manual steps compared with traditional push/transfer processes and can shorten time-to-delivery. It is particularly relevant for fixed-price inventory intended for quick checkout.

Broker-assisted sales available

Afternic offers brokerage services for negotiations and acquisition, which can help buyers pursue domains that are not straightforward retail purchases. Sellers can also use brokerage support for higher-value names where negotiation is common. This adds a service layer that many standard domain registration providers do not emphasize.

cons

Not a primary registrar focus

Afternic is centered on aftermarket buying and selling rather than registering new domains. Users looking for bundled hosting, email, site builders, or broad DNS management typically rely on a separate registrar platform. This can add operational overhead for organizations that want a single vendor for the full domain lifecycle.

Fees and margin impact

Marketplace and brokerage transactions generally involve commissions and/or service fees that reduce seller proceeds compared with direct private sales. Pricing and payout outcomes can vary by sale type (e.g., network distribution versus brokered deals). For portfolio owners, these costs can materially affect net returns.

Transfer eligibility constraints

Fast-transfer and network distribution depend on registrar participation and domain eligibility requirements. Domains at non-participating registrars or with certain status/lock conditions may require more manual transfer steps. This can introduce variability in buyer experience and fulfillment timelines.

Plan & Pricing

Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go (commission on completed domain sales)

Free tier/trial: See fields below for availability.

  • Afternic Basic: 25% of sale price (standard). Reduced to 15% if the domain points to approved nameservers. $15 minimum commission fee applies to all sales.

Custom Checkout Link (close externally-negotiated deals via GoDaddy/Dan infrastructure):

  • Buy Now: 5% commission (minimum $15).
  • Lease to Own (via Custom Checkout Link): flat 10% commission (max 12-month lease term for this flow). These rates are not dependent on nameserver settings.

Lease to Own (LTO) — buyer service fees and seller commission discounts:

    • 2–12 months: 0%
    • 13–24 months: 10%
    • 25–36 months: 20%
    • 37–60 months: 30%
  • Seller commission discount by LTO term length (applies to Afternic standard commissions):

    • 13–24 months: 5% discount
    • 25–36 months: 10% discount
    • 37–60 months: 15% discount

Fast Transfer / Network exposure: Fast Transfer (and Standard vs Premium Network exposure) uses the standard Afternic commission rates above; Premium Network exposure requires Fast Transfer eligibility but does not change the standard commission schedule.

Notes & limits:

  • Custom Checkout Link Buy Now supports prices of $99 or more; LTO eligible prices are $495–$100,000 (Afternic LTO limits).
