What is Particle Device Cloud
Particle Device Cloud is a cloud platform for provisioning, managing, and monitoring connected IoT devices built on Particle’s device OS, hardware modules, and connectivity options. It supports device onboarding, secure communications, remote firmware updates, and device-to-cloud messaging for product teams deploying fleets in the field. The platform is typically used by engineering and operations teams building commercial IoT products that require managed connectivity and lifecycle management. It is differentiated by tight integration with Particle hardware, Device OS, and developer tooling for end-to-end IoT product delivery.
Integrated device lifecycle management
The platform provides core fleet operations such as device provisioning, identity management, and remote device control. It supports over-the-air firmware updates to manage software versions across deployed devices. This reduces the need to assemble separate components for device management, firmware delivery, and device communications.
Secure device-to-cloud communications
Particle Device Cloud uses authenticated device identities and encrypted communications between devices and the cloud. It includes mechanisms for managing device keys/credentials as part of onboarding and ongoing operations. This helps teams standardize security controls across a fleet without building a custom device connectivity layer from scratch.
Developer tooling and APIs
The product includes APIs and tooling that support building device applications and integrating device data into external systems. It supports event-based messaging patterns commonly used for telemetry and command-and-control. This can accelerate prototyping and production rollout for teams that want a single vendor stack from device firmware through cloud management.
Best fit within Particle stack
Many capabilities are optimized for devices running Particle Device OS and using Particle hardware modules or connectivity offerings. Organizations with heterogeneous hardware fleets may need additional integration work or may not be able to use all features uniformly. This can reduce flexibility compared with more hardware-agnostic device management approaches.
Limited as general observability platform
While it supports device monitoring and fleet operations, it is not a full replacement for broad infrastructure/application observability tools. Teams often still need separate systems for deep log analytics, distributed tracing, or enterprise-wide monitoring across non-IoT services. This can add operational complexity for organizations seeking a single monitoring plane.
Connectivity and deployment constraints
IoT deployments may require specific cellular carriers, regions, or connectivity management features that vary by project and geography. Depending on requirements, teams may need additional connectivity partners or custom arrangements beyond the core device cloud functions. This can complicate global rollouts and cost management for large-scale fleets.
Plan & Pricing
| Plan | Price | Key features & notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 per month (forever) | Up to 100 devices; 100K Data Operations/month; up to 100 MB cellular data/month pooled; no credit card required; device communication paused when monthly limit reached. |
| Basic | $299 per month per block | Each block includes up to 100 devices, 720K Data Operations/month, and up to 540 MB cellular data/month pooled. Add multiple blocks to scale. |
| Plus | $599 per month per block | Each block includes up to 100 devices, 5M Data Operations/month, and ~3 GB cellular data/month pooled. Intended for higher data/automation workloads. |
| Enterprise / Professional | Custom pricing | Contact sales for enterprise contracts, custom device/data limits, and annual pooling. |
Notes: Billing is measured in monthly "blocks" for Basic and Plus; blocks include device capacity, Data Operations, and cellular data pooled across devices. The Free plan is a permanent sandbox for prototyping; exceeds limits are paused until next billing cycle.
