What is Bitso
Bitso is a cryptocurrency exchange that enables individuals and businesses to buy, sell, and hold digital assets, with a focus on Latin American markets. It provides trading, custody, and fiat on/off-ramp capabilities, and also offers APIs for programmatic access. The product is commonly used for retail trading as well as cross-border payments and treasury operations where local currency rails are required.
Business APIs and integrations
Bitso provides APIs that allow companies to integrate trading, transfers, and account operations into their own applications. This supports use cases such as payment flows, treasury rebalancing, and automated execution. The API-first option can be a differentiator for teams that need programmatic control rather than only a consumer UI.
Strong LATAM fiat rails
Bitso supports local deposit and withdrawal methods in key Latin American markets, enabling users to move between fiat and crypto without relying solely on international banking. This is useful for customers who need local currency access for trading or settlement. For businesses, these rails can reduce operational friction for regional payouts and collections.
Consumer and institutional coverage
The platform serves both retail users and business customers, which can simplify vendor consolidation for organizations that need end-user access plus corporate accounts. Bitso’s product set typically spans spot trading, custody, and transfer functionality. This breadth can reduce the need to stitch together separate providers for basic exchange and movement of funds.
Geographic availability constraints
Bitso’s strongest functionality is tied to specific Latin American jurisdictions, and availability varies by country. Users outside supported regions may not have access to the same fiat on/off-ramps or account features. Organizations operating globally may still need additional exchanges or payment providers for full coverage.
Asset and market depth limits
Compared with the largest global exchanges, Bitso may offer fewer listed assets, trading pairs, and advanced market structures depending on jurisdiction. This can matter for traders seeking broad token coverage or deep liquidity across many markets. It may also limit certain hedging or execution strategies for high-volume users.
Custodial and compliance overhead
As a centralized exchange, Bitso custody is custodial by default, which introduces counterparty and operational risk considerations. Business customers often need additional controls such as withdrawal allowlists, segregation policies, and internal approvals to meet governance requirements. Compliance and reporting needs (e.g., transaction monitoring, audits, tax reporting) can require extra process and tooling beyond the exchange itself.
