What is Confluent

Confluent is an event streaming platform built around Apache Kafka for publishing, storing, and processing real-time data streams. It is used by platform engineering, data engineering, and application teams to build event-driven applications, integrate operational systems, and stream data into analytics and data platforms. The product is available as a managed cloud service (Confluent Cloud) and as self-managed software (Confluent Platform), with tooling for connectors, stream processing, governance, and operations.

pros

Kafka-native streaming foundation

Confluent is designed around Apache Kafka concepts such as topics, partitions, consumer groups, and log-based retention. This alignment supports common event-driven patterns including pub/sub, event sourcing, and CDC-based integration. It also helps teams standardize on a widely adopted streaming backbone while using Confluent-provided operational and governance components.

Managed cloud operations option

Confluent Cloud reduces the operational burden of running Kafka clusters by providing a managed service model. It supports common enterprise needs such as scaling, upgrades, and multi-environment deployments without requiring teams to manage brokers directly. This can accelerate time-to-production for streaming use cases compared with fully self-managed deployments.

Broad integration via connectors

Confluent provides Kafka Connect-based connectors to move data between Kafka and external systems such as databases, object storage, and SaaS applications. This supports streaming ingestion and distribution patterns that complement batch-oriented data integration tools. Connector-based integration can reduce custom code for common source/target systems and standardize data movement through the streaming layer.

cons

Operational and design complexity

Event streaming architectures require careful design around topic strategy, partitioning, schema evolution, and consumer behavior. Self-managed deployments add additional complexity for capacity planning, upgrades, security hardening, and reliability engineering. Even with managed service options, teams typically need specialized skills to operate streaming pipelines effectively.

Not a general-purpose database

Kafka-based storage is optimized for ordered logs and stream replay rather than ad hoc querying and transactional workloads. Confluent does not replace analytical warehouses or OLTP databases for interactive SQL, complex joins, or broad indexing needs. Organizations commonly pair it with separate systems for long-term analytics and serving queries.

Cost sensitivity at scale

High-throughput streaming, long retention, and large numbers of partitions can increase infrastructure and operational costs. Managed service pricing can become significant for workloads with sustained throughput, heavy connector usage, or multi-region requirements. Cost management often requires active governance of retention policies, topic/partition design, and data duplication across environments.

Plan & Pricing

Plan Price Key features & notes
Basic $0 / Month (Starting at $0) Serverless, autoscaling Kafka clusters for dev/test and small workloads; includes 80+ fully managed connectors; “Get started free” (Basic is listed as starting at $0/month). Prices vary by region.
Standard Starting at ~ $385 / Month Production-ready serverless tier with 99.99% SLA (for 2+ eCKUs), infinite storage, audit logs, better throughput and savings at scale. (Site lists Standard "Starting at ~$385/Month").
Enterprise Starting at ~ $895 / Month Mission-critical features: private networking, GBps+ autoscaling, enhanced partition limits, enterprise support and compliance features. (Site lists Enterprise "Starting at ~$895/Month").
Dedicated / Freight Custom / Contact Sales Dedicated clusters (pre-provisioned CKUs) and Freight (high-throughput) are custom-priced; contact sales for quotes.

Additional official billing notes (selected examples):

  • Confluent Cloud billing is consumption-based: clusters are billed by eCKU/CKU per hour, ingress/egress per GB, and storage per GB-hour; prices vary by cluster type and region. (Billing dimensions: eCKU/CKU, ingress, egress, storage).
  • Confluent offers annual commitments (minimum spend) for discounts and also pay-as-you-go.
  • Managed connector pricing is metered by $/task/hour plus $/GB throughput (connector task and throughput ranges shown on Confluent’s managed connector pricing page).
  • Cluster-link and some network charges are explicitly listed (example: $0.25/hour per cluster-link for internet endpoints; private networking and premium-region multipliers apply).
