What is HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO)

HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) is an embedded server management and monitoring platform for HPE ProLiant servers that provides out-of-band access to hardware health, power/thermal telemetry, and remote console functions. It is used by infrastructure and data center operations teams to monitor server status, perform remote troubleshooting, and manage firmware and configuration without relying on the host operating system. iLO differentiates from general-purpose observability tools by operating at the hardware/firmware layer and remaining available even when the OS is down (subject to server power and network connectivity).

pros

Out-of-band hardware visibility

iLO provides hardware-level telemetry such as sensors, event logs, power consumption, and component health independent of the operating system. This helps teams diagnose failures when the OS is unresponsive or not yet installed. It also supports remote console and virtual media workflows that are specific to server lifecycle operations.

Tight ProLiant integration

iLO is built into HPE ProLiant platforms and integrates with HPE server firmware, security features, and lifecycle management tooling. This enables consistent access to platform-specific capabilities like firmware inventory, hardware event correlation, and policy-driven configuration. For organizations standardized on HPE servers, this reduces the need for separate agents for basic hardware monitoring.

Remote administration capabilities

iLO supports remote power control, remote console access, and recovery actions that can reduce the need for physical access to servers. These capabilities are useful for distributed sites and lights-out data centers. The feature set is oriented toward break/fix and provisioning tasks rather than application performance monitoring.

cons

Limited to HPE servers

iLO is primarily applicable to HPE ProLiant (and related HPE) server hardware and does not provide a vendor-neutral view across mixed server fleets. Organizations with multiple hardware vendors typically need additional monitoring to standardize dashboards and alerting. This can increase operational complexity compared with tools designed for heterogeneous environments.

Not full-stack observability

iLO focuses on hardware and platform management and does not natively provide deep application tracing, code-level diagnostics, or broad cloud service monitoring. Teams looking for end-to-end service health still require separate solutions for metrics, logs, and traces at the application and infrastructure layers. As a result, iLO is complementary rather than a replacement for general observability platforms.

Licensing and feature gating

Some advanced capabilities (for example, enhanced remote console features and certain management functions) depend on iLO licensing tiers that vary by generation. This can create differences in functionality across server models and procurement cycles. It may also complicate standardization when managing large fleets with mixed license levels.
