What is Eraser
Eraser is a Windows data destruction utility used to securely delete files, folders, and unused disk space to reduce the chance of recovery with forensic tools. It is typically used by individuals and small organizations that need ad hoc secure deletion on endpoints rather than centralized enterprise media sanitization. The product focuses on configurable erasure tasks (immediate or scheduled) and supports multiple overwrite methods.
Multiple erasure methods
Eraser supports a range of overwrite algorithms for file and free-space wiping. This allows users to align deletion behavior with internal policies or common sanitization guidance. Compared with basic file shredders, it provides more control over how data is overwritten.
Scheduled and repeatable tasks
The tool can run erasure jobs on demand or on a schedule. This helps users automate recurring cleanup such as wiping free space after routine deletions. Task-based operation also makes it easier to standardize steps across machines when used with scripts or documented procedures.
Free-space wiping support
In addition to deleting specific files and folders, Eraser can wipe unused disk space to address remnants left by normal deletions. This is useful for endpoints where sensitive files were previously stored and removed. Many simple shredding tools focus only on selected items and do not address free-space remnants as directly.
Windows-focused, limited platforms
Eraser is primarily designed for Microsoft Windows. Organizations with macOS, Linux, mobile, or mixed-device fleets typically need additional tools to cover those endpoints. This limits suitability for cross-platform standardization.
Not an enterprise sanitization suite
Eraser does not function as a full enterprise media sanitization platform with centralized reporting, audit trails, and hardware lifecycle workflows. Teams that require compliance reporting, chain-of-custody documentation, or large-scale drive erasure management may find it insufficient. It is better suited to local endpoint use than to governed ITAD processes.
No guarantee of SSD sanitization
Software overwriting approaches can be unreliable on SSDs due to wear leveling and controller behavior. For SSDs, organizations often require firmware-based secure erase, cryptographic erase, or vendor-approved sanitization methods. Eraser may not meet strict requirements for SSD media sanitization without additional controls.
