What is Amazon Datazone

Amazon DataZone is a data management and governance service on AWS that helps organizations catalog, discover, and request access to data across accounts and services. It is used by data producers, data consumers (analysts, data scientists), and governance teams to publish data products, manage metadata, and apply access workflows. The product centers on a business data catalog experience with approvals and policy-based access, and it integrates with AWS analytics and storage services.

pros

Catalog and data product workflows

The service supports publishing datasets with business context and metadata so consumers can find and evaluate data. It includes request-and-approval workflows that formalize access to governed data. This helps operationalize data sharing between producer and consumer teams without relying solely on ad hoc ticketing.

Centralized discovery for consumers

Amazon DataZone provides a unified portal experience for searching and browsing available data assets. It is designed to bridge technical metadata with business descriptions and ownership information. This can improve reuse of existing datasets and reduce duplicated data pipelines.

Native AWS governance integration

Amazon DataZone integrates with AWS identity and access controls and common AWS data services to support governed discovery and access. This reduces the need to build custom connectors and access workflows for data that already resides on AWS. It fits organizations standardizing on AWS for data lakes, warehouses, and analytics.

cons

AWS-centric deployment model

Amazon DataZone is primarily designed for data stored and managed within AWS. Organizations with significant multi-cloud or on-prem data estates may need additional tooling and integration work to achieve consistent governance and discovery. This can limit suitability as a single enterprise-wide governance layer outside AWS.

Depends on broader AWS setup

Effective use typically requires alignment with AWS IAM, data lake/warehouse architecture, and related governance services. Teams may need AWS platform expertise to configure domains, projects, and access policies appropriately. Time-to-value can be slower if foundational data management practices are not already in place.

Not a full MDM/CDP suite

Amazon DataZone focuses on cataloging, discovery, and governed access rather than customer identity resolution, event collection, or marketing activation. Organizations looking for end-to-end customer data unification and downstream activation may require additional products. It is better positioned as a governance and discovery layer than as a customer data platform.

Plan & Pricing

Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go

Free tier/trial: Amazon DataZone provides recurring monthly free usage allowances (per account, per billing month): 20 MB free metadata storage, 4,000 free API requests, and 0.2 free compute units. In addition, certain core APIs (e.g., CreateDomain, CreateProject, Search) are provided free and do not count toward the 4,000 free API requests.

Example costs:

  • Requests: $10 per 100,000 requests (after 4,000 free requests per account per billing month).
  • Metadata storage: $0.40 per GB (after 20 MB free per account per billing month). Example: 1 GB (1024 MB) would incur $0.39 in a billing month after the 20 MB free allowance.
  • Compute: $1.776 per compute unit (after 0.2 free compute units per account per billing month). Example: 1 compute unit charged = (1 - 0.2) * $1.776 = $1.42.
  • Recommendations (AI generative recommendations): $0.015 per 1,000 input tokens and $0.075 per 1,000 output tokens (no free usage).

Discount options / notes: The pricing page states there are no monthly user-based subscription charges as of Nov 1, 2024 and describes a pay-as-you-go model; the pricing page does not list separate tiered plans, long-term commitment discounts, or enterprise-contact pricing on the public pricing page.
