What is Cryptomator
Cryptomator is a client-side encryption tool that creates encrypted “vaults” for files and folders, commonly used to protect data stored in cloud-sync folders and local storage. It targets individuals and teams that need to prevent cloud providers or other third parties from reading file contents while keeping normal file workflows. The product focuses on transparent, file-by-file encryption with a virtual drive or folder-based workflow and is distributed as open-source software with desktop and mobile apps.
Client-side, zero-knowledge model
Cryptomator encrypts data before it leaves the user’s device, so storage providers only see ciphertext and encrypted filenames (depending on configuration). This approach fits use cases where confidentiality is required without relying on a provider-managed key service. It aligns with security models used by confidentiality platforms, but implemented at the endpoint for user-controlled storage.
Cloud-agnostic vault workflow
Vaults are stored as regular folders, which can be placed in many sync locations (e.g., common cloud drive folders, network shares, or removable media). This reduces dependency on a single storage vendor and supports mixed environments. The design is practical for organizations that standardize on multiple storage tools or allow user choice.
Open-source and auditable codebase

Limited enterprise administration

No built-in data governance

It also does not natively provide document-level usage controls (e.g., view/print restrictions) associated with DRM-style solutions.
Workflow and recovery tradeoffs
Client-side encryption introduces operational considerations such as key/password management, recovery planning, and user training. If credentials are lost and no recovery mechanism is in place, data may be unrecoverable. Performance and usability can also vary by platform due to virtual drive integration and large-vault synchronization behavior.
