What is ADP® Federated Single Sign-On
ADP® Federated Single Sign-On is an SSO capability used to federate user authentication between an organization’s identity provider and ADP applications. It is primarily used by employers that use ADP for HR, payroll, and related workforce services and want users to access ADP with their existing corporate credentials. The product typically relies on standards-based federation (for example, SAML) and is administered in the context of an organization’s ADP tenant and identity environment. It is positioned as an access layer for ADP services rather than a broad, vendor-agnostic identity platform for all enterprise applications.
Tight alignment with ADP apps
It is designed to provide federated access into ADP workforce applications, reducing the need for separate ADP-specific passwords. This can simplify the user sign-in experience for employees and administrators who already manage identities in a corporate directory or identity provider. For organizations standardizing on ADP, the integration focus can reduce configuration ambiguity compared with general-purpose identity tools.
Standards-based federation support
Federated SSO commonly uses established protocols such as SAML, enabling integration with many enterprise identity providers. This supports centralized authentication and can help organizations apply consistent sign-in policies outside of ADP. Standards-based federation also helps with lifecycle changes (for example, disabling a user in the IdP) by making the IdP the primary authentication authority.
Centralized access administration
SSO reduces the number of credential stores administrators must manage for ADP access. It can support controlled access patterns (for example, requiring authentication through the organization’s IdP) and can reduce help-desk load related to password resets for ADP-only credentials. Administration is typically scoped to ADP access, which can make governance clearer for ADP application owners.
Narrow scope beyond ADP
The product is primarily intended to provide SSO into ADP services rather than act as a full identity management suite for all enterprise applications. Organizations looking for a single platform to manage SSO, MFA, device trust, and application catalogs across many SaaS and on-prem apps may need additional tooling. As a result, it may not replace broader identity management software in heterogeneous environments.
Limited identity governance features
Federated SSO focuses on authentication and access into ADP, not full identity governance and administration (IGA) such as access reviews, role mining, and segregation-of-duties controls. If an organization requires formal certification workflows or extensive audit reporting across many systems, it will likely need complementary governance solutions. Provisioning and deprovisioning depth can also depend on what is supported for each ADP service and the organization’s IdP.
Dependency on IdP configuration
Successful deployment depends on correct configuration and ongoing maintenance of the organization’s identity provider, certificates, and federation settings. Changes such as IdP migrations, domain changes, or certificate rotations can cause authentication disruptions if not coordinated. Troubleshooting often spans multiple parties (IdP team, ADP admin, and possibly ADP support), which can increase resolution time.
