What is Progress Telerik Fiddler
Progress Telerik Fiddler is a web debugging proxy used to capture, inspect, and modify HTTP/HTTPS traffic between client applications and servers. It is used by developers, QA, and support teams to troubleshoot API calls, diagnose performance and caching issues, and reproduce defects by replaying requests. The tool focuses on deep request/response inspection and traffic manipulation rather than end-to-end monitoring or full bug/issue management workflows.
Deep HTTP(S) traffic inspection
It captures web traffic and exposes request/response headers, bodies, cookies, and status codes for detailed analysis. This supports debugging of REST/GraphQL APIs, authentication flows, redirects, and caching behavior. It also helps validate what the client actually sends over the wire, which is often necessary when server logs are incomplete.
Request replay and modification
It supports reissuing requests and editing parameters, headers, and payloads to reproduce issues and test fixes. This is useful for isolating client-side versus server-side defects and for validating edge cases without changing application code. Teams can use this to create repeatable steps for defect reproduction and verification.
Local proxy for multiple clients
It can proxy traffic from browsers and other HTTP clients, enabling debugging across different applications and environments. This helps when issues occur only on specific devices, networks, or client configurations. The proxy approach also enables inspection of third-party calls that are otherwise hard to observe from within the application.
Not a bug tracking system
It does not provide native issue intake, prioritization, assignment, or workflow management typical of bug tracking software. Teams still need separate tools for ticketing, collaboration, and reporting. Evidence captured in Fiddler generally must be exported or manually attached to issues elsewhere.
Limited production observability
It is primarily a local debugging tool and is not designed for continuous production monitoring, alerting, or distributed tracing. It does not replace application performance monitoring or error aggregation platforms used for ongoing reliability management. As a result, it is less suitable for detecting issues at scale without a separate observability stack.
HTTPS interception setup overhead
Decrypting HTTPS traffic typically requires installing and trusting a local root certificate, which can be restricted by enterprise policies. This setup can be confusing for non-technical users and may introduce security/compliance concerns if not governed properly. Some environments (locked-down devices, certain corporate networks) can limit its effectiveness.
