What is Azure DNS
Azure DNS is a managed Domain Name System (DNS) hosting service within Microsoft Azure that lets organizations host and manage DNS zones and records. It targets IT, network, and cloud teams that need authoritative DNS for public domains and private name resolution inside Azure virtual networks. The service integrates with Azure Resource Manager, role-based access control, and Azure monitoring/logging to manage DNS as part of cloud infrastructure operations.
Deep Azure integration
Azure DNS integrates with Azure Resource Manager, Azure RBAC, and Azure Policy, enabling infrastructure-as-code and centralized governance. It supports private DNS zones for name resolution within Azure virtual networks, which fits common cloud network designs. Global anycast DNS network
Azure DNS uses a global anycast network to serve authoritative DNS responses from multiple locations. This design supports low-latency resolution for geographically distributed users and applications. It also reduces reliance on a single regional endpoint compared with self-managed DNS deployments.
Enterprise controls and auditing

Azure-centric operational model
Azure DNS is optimized for organizations that already use Azure identity, governance, and deployment tooling. Registrar and domain management separate
Azure DNS hosts DNS zones but does not function as a general-purpose domain registrar. Organizations typically manage domain registration and some domain lifecycle tasks outside Azure, then delegate DNS to Azure name servers. This can add vendor coordination and process steps compared with providers that bundle registration and DNS management.
Feature scope varies by need
Azure DNS focuses on authoritative DNS hosting and private DNS for Azure networks, but it is not a full edge security/performance suite. Capabilities such as web application firewalling, DDoS features beyond platform protections, or application acceleration are handled by other services. Buyers seeking an all-in-one DNS plus security/performance platform may need additional products and integration work.
