What is FileVault
FileVault is full-disk encryption software built into Apple operating systems to protect data at rest on Macs by encrypting the startup disk. It targets individuals and organizations that manage macOS endpoints and need device-level confidentiality for lost, stolen, or decommissioned hardware. If recovery keys are not properly escrowed and managed, organizations can face data loss scenarios during offboarding, device repair, or credential resets. Enabling FileVault can add steps to provisioning, imaging, and troubleshooting workflows, especially for remote users. Some compliance programs require evidence of encryption status, which depends on correct management reporting. Operational maturity is important to avoid gaps between policy and practice.
