What is Google Cloud Pub/Sub
Google Cloud Pub/Sub is a fully managed publish/subscribe messaging service on Google Cloud used to ingest, buffer, and distribute event streams between systems. It supports asynchronous communication for microservices, event-driven applications, log and telemetry pipelines, and data ingestion into analytics and storage services. The service provides topics and subscriptions with push or pull delivery models, integrates with Google Cloud IAM for access control, and offers features such as message ordering, filtering, and dead-letter topics.
Managed global event ingestion
Pub/Sub offloads broker provisioning, patching, and capacity management to Google Cloud, which reduces operational overhead compared with self-managed messaging stacks. It supports high-throughput event ingestion patterns and decouples producers from consumers via topics and subscriptions. This fits common real-time data pipeline and application integration use cases where teams want a cloud-managed service rather than operating their own brokers.
Deep Google Cloud integration
Pub/Sub integrates natively with Google Cloud services used for analytics and data processing, including Dataflow, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Functions/Cloud Run. IAM-based authentication and authorization align with standard Google Cloud security administration. These integrations simplify building end-to-end ingestion and processing pipelines without additional connectors for many Google Cloud-centric architectures.
Flexible delivery and controls
The service supports both pull and push subscriptions, enabling different consumer architectures and network constraints. Features such as message filtering, ordering keys, dead-letter topics, and retry/acknowledgement controls help manage delivery behavior and failure handling. This provides practical controls for building reliable event-driven workflows and fan-out patterns.
Cloud and ecosystem dependence
Pub/Sub is a Google Cloud service, so architectures that standardize on multiple clouds may face additional integration work or duplicated messaging layers. While APIs are accessible over HTTP/gRPC, operational tooling and identity controls are tightly coupled to Google Cloud. Migrating workloads away from Google Cloud can require reworking IAM, monitoring, and downstream integrations.
Not a full streaming analytics stack
Pub/Sub focuses on transport and delivery of messages rather than providing built-in stream processing, stateful computations, or interactive analytics. Teams typically pair it with separate processing and analytics services for transformations, windowing, and querying. Organizations looking for an integrated analytics environment may need additional products and operational coordination.
Cost and quota management complexity
Costs can be sensitive to message volume, retention, egress, and subscriber delivery patterns, which can be difficult to forecast for spiky workloads. Quotas, throughput tuning, and subscription configurations (e.g., ack deadlines, push endpoints) require ongoing governance to avoid backlogs or unexpected spend. This can add planning overhead compared with simpler, lower-volume queueing use cases.
Plan & Pricing
Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go Free tier: First 10 GiB of message throughput per billing account each calendar month is free. Throughput (message publish + delivery): $40 per TiB (TiB = 2^40 bytes) after the free 10 GiB (Message Delivery Basic SKU). Special throughput rates:
- BigQuery subscriptions (subscribe throughput writing to BigQuery): $50 per TiB (first 10 GiB for BigQuery subscriptions is NOT free).
- Cloud Storage subscriptions (writing to Cloud Storage): $50 per TiB (first 10 GiB for Cloud Storage subscriptions is NOT free).
- Import topics (Kinesis Data Streams): $50 per TiB.
- Import topics (Cloud Storage, Azure Event Hubs, AWS MSK, Confluent Cloud): $80 per TiB. Single Message Transform (SMT / UDF) processing: $40 per TiB (based on larger of input or output sizes). Storage: $0.27 per GiB‑month for retained messages, snapshots, or subscriptions configured to retain acknowledged messages (applies when retention/storage conditions are met). Minimums / volume calculation: A 1 KB minimum is assessed per request (batching recommended for very small messages). Data transfer: Standard Google Cloud data transfer rules apply; charges occur when messages cross region boundaries; no zone data transfer fees for Pub/Sub. Example pricing guidance: The official page provides sample monthly cost comparisons (Pub/Sub vs Pub/Sub Lite) and recommends using the Pricing Calculator for estimates. Discounts / custom quotes: Pay-as-you-go pricing; contact sales for custom quotes or enterprise arrangements.
