What is Google Cloud Pub/Sub
Google Cloud Pub/Sub is a fully managed publish/subscribe messaging service on Google Cloud used to ingest, buffer, and distribute event streams between systems. Deep Google Cloud integration

The service supports both pull and push subscriptions, enabling different consumer architectures and network constraints. Cloud and ecosystem dependence
Pub/Sub is a Google Cloud service, so architectures that standardize on multiple clouds may face additional integration work or duplicated messaging layers. While APIs are accessible over HTTP/gRPC, operational tooling and identity controls are tightly coupled to Google Cloud. Migrating workloads away from Google Cloud can require reworking IAM, monitoring, and downstream integrations.
Not a full streaming analytics stack
Pub/Sub focuses on transport and delivery of messages rather than providing built-in stream processing, stateful computations, or interactive analytics. Teams typically pair it with separate processing and analytics services for transformations, windowing, and querying. Organizations looking for an integrated analytics environment may need additional products and operational coordination.
Cost and quota management complexity
Costs can be sensitive to message volume, retention, egress, and subscriber delivery patterns, which can be difficult to forecast for spiky workloads. Quotas, throughput tuning, and subscription configurations (e.g., ack deadlines, push endpoints) require ongoing governance to avoid backlogs or unexpected spend. This can add planning overhead compared with simpler, lower-volume queueing use cases.

Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go Free tier: First 10 GiB of message throughput per billing account each calendar month is free. Throughput (message publish + delivery): $40 per TiB (TiB = 2^40 bytes) after the free 10 GiB (Message Delivery Basic SKU). Special throughput rates:
- BigQuery subscriptions (subscribe throughput writing to BigQuery): $50 per TiB (first 10 GiB for BigQuery subscriptions is NOT free).
- Cloud Storage subscriptions (writing to Cloud Storage): $50 per TiB (first 10 GiB for Cloud Storage subscriptions is NOT free).
- Import topics (Kinesis Data Streams): $50 per TiB.
- Import topics (Cloud Storage, Azure Event Hubs, AWS MSK, Confluent Cloud): $80 per TiB. Single Message Transform (SMT / UDF) processing: $40 per TiB (based on larger of input or output sizes). Storage: $0.27 per GiB‑month for retained messages, snapshots, or subscriptions configured to retain acknowledged messages (applies when retention/storage conditions are met). Minimums / volume calculation: A 1 KB minimum is assessed per request (batching recommended for very small messages). Data transfer: Standard Google Cloud data transfer rules apply; charges occur when messages cross region boundaries; no zone data transfer fees for Pub/Sub.
