Nutanix AHV

AHV integrates directly with Nutanix cluster services and is administered through Nutanix Prism for VM, host, and cluster operations. This reduces the need to deploy and maintain separate management components for virtualization versus the underlying HCI stack. Operational workflows such as VM lifecycle actions, host maintenance, and cluster upgrades are designed to align with Nutanix’s platform model. AHV is built on the KVM hypervisor, a widely used virtualization technology in Linux ecosystems. This provides a mature base for running common guest operating systems and standard VM constructs. In practice, AHV’s value comes from Nutanix’s packaging and management around KVM rather than from KVM alone.

AHV supports Nutanix networking capabilities such as virtual switching and, depending on licensing and configuration, microsegmentation features (Flow) for VM-to-VM traffic control. This allows some network and security controls to be applied at the virtualization layer without relying exclusively on external network appliances.
