What is Yoti Age Verification
Yoti Age Verification is an age assurance product that helps online services confirm whether a user meets an age threshold (for example, 18+) without requiring full identity verification in every case. It is used by digital platforms and e-commerce teams that need to restrict access to age-gated goods or content and support compliance workflows. The product supports multiple age-check methods, including document-based checks and facial age estimation, typically delivered via SDKs and APIs for web and mobile integration. It is positioned as a privacy-oriented approach by returning an age or age-band result rather than broader identity data when appropriate.
Multiple age-check methods
The product supports different approaches to age assurance, including ID document verification and facial age estimation. This allows businesses to choose a method aligned to their risk tolerance and user experience goals. It also enables fallback paths when one method fails (for example, switching from face-based estimation to document checks). This flexibility is useful for mixed audiences and varying regulatory expectations across markets.
API and SDK integration
Yoti Age Verification is typically implemented through APIs and SDKs that can be embedded into web and mobile user journeys. This supports common use cases such as checkout gating, account creation gating, and access control for restricted content. Developer-oriented delivery can reduce time to integrate compared with fully custom builds. It also allows product teams to iterate on flows (for example, step-up checks) without replacing the underlying provider.
Data-minimization oriented outputs
The service can be configured to return an age or age-estimation result rather than a full identity profile, depending on the method used and customer configuration. This can help organizations implement age gating while limiting the amount of personal data processed in the transaction. For some use cases, this reduces friction compared with full KYC-style onboarding. It also supports privacy-by-design patterns where only the minimum necessary attribute is shared.
Not full e-commerce suite
Despite being used in e-commerce contexts, the product is not an end-to-end e-commerce platform. Merchants still need separate systems for catalog, payments, fraud management, and order processing. Integration work is required to connect age checks to checkout logic, account systems, and customer support processes. Buyers looking for a single-vendor commerce stack will need additional vendors or internal development.
Accuracy and bias considerations
Facial age estimation can produce uncertain results near threshold ages and may perform differently across demographics, lighting conditions, and camera quality. Many organizations must implement buffers (for example, challenge users who appear close to the threshold) which can increase friction. Document checks can improve certainty but add user effort and may reduce conversion. These trade-offs require careful policy design and monitoring.
Coverage varies by region
Document-based verification depends on supported document types and country coverage, which may not be uniform across all markets. Businesses operating globally may need to validate that local IDs and languages are supported for their target geographies. Regulatory expectations for age assurance also vary, which can require configuration changes and legal review. Some organizations may still need additional controls (for example, geolocation or payment-based checks) to meet specific compliance requirements.
