What is n8n
n8n is a workflow automation and integration platform used to connect applications, APIs, and data sources through visual workflows and code-capable steps. It is used by technical teams to build automations for operational processes, data movement, and event-driven integrations, and it is also used for security-related automations when connected to security tools. n8n supports self-hosted deployments as well as a managed cloud offering, and it provides a large library of prebuilt connectors plus HTTP and scripting nodes for custom integrations.
Flexible workflow building model
n8n combines a visual workflow editor with options for custom logic using JavaScript and generic HTTP/API steps. This makes it suitable for both standard SaaS-to-SaaS integrations and bespoke API-driven processes. The same workflow can orchestrate multi-step processes across apps, databases, and internal services.
Self-hosting and deployment control
n8n can run self-hosted, which allows organizations to keep data processing within their own infrastructure and align with internal security and compliance requirements. Self-hosting also enables network-local connectivity to private systems without exposing them publicly. For teams that prefer less operational overhead, a managed cloud option is available.
Broad connector and API coverage
n8n provides many prebuilt nodes for common business systems and developer services, reducing the need to build integrations from scratch. When a dedicated connector is not available, HTTP request and webhook triggers provide a general integration path. This approach supports long-tail integrations and internal APIs alongside mainstream applications.
Not a full SOAR suite
While n8n can automate security workflows, it does not provide the full set of SOAR-native capabilities found in dedicated incident response platforms. Areas that may require additional tooling include case management, analyst collaboration features, evidence handling, and security-specific reporting. Security teams often need to design these processes using external systems and custom workflow conventions.
Governance can require effort
As workflow counts grow, teams may need to implement their own standards for naming, versioning, testing, and promotion across environments. Role-based access, credential management, and change control typically require deliberate configuration and operational discipline. Without this, organizations can face workflow sprawl and inconsistent automation quality.
Connector depth varies by app
Prebuilt nodes differ in how completely they cover each application’s API, and some use cases may still require custom HTTP calls or scripting. This can increase implementation time for complex data integration scenarios such as bidirectional sync, conflict handling, and schema mapping. Teams may need to build and maintain custom nodes for specialized systems.
