What is Remote Desktop Services
Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a Microsoft Windows Server role that enables users to access Windows desktops and applications remotely over the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). It is commonly used by IT teams to publish session-based desktops, deliver RemoteApp applications, and centralize desktop access for employees and contractors. Native Windows Server integration

Licensing typically involves Windows Server plus RDS Client Access Licenses (CALs), and may require careful compliance management. High availability and external access scenarios add additional configuration and infrastructure requirements.
Security depends on configuration
Exposing RDP directly to the internet is widely discouraged; secure deployments generally require RD Gateway, MFA integration, and strict network controls. Misconfiguration can increase risk, and patching cadence for Windows Server remains an ongoing operational requirement. Organizations may need additional tooling for monitoring, privileged access controls, and session auditing beyond baseline capabilities.
Limited built-in support workflows
RDS focuses on delivering remote desktops and apps rather than technician-led support workflows. Capabilities commonly expected in dedicated support tools—such as lightweight ad-hoc sessions, technician ticketing integration, unattended endpoint management, and granular support reporting—are not core features. Many teams supplement RDS with separate ITSM, endpoint management, or remote support products.
