What is UiPath Task Mining
UiPath Task Mining is a task mining product that captures and analyzes user desktop interactions to identify how work is performed at the task level. It is used by process improvement teams, automation program owners, and business analysts to discover automation candidates, document as-is workflows, and support process standardization. The product focuses on user-interaction data (as opposed to only system event logs) and integrates with UiPath’s automation platform to help translate findings into automation opportunities.
Desktop-level work visibility
It captures user interactions on desktops to reveal task steps that may not appear in enterprise system logs. This helps teams understand manual work, workarounds, and cross-application handoffs. It is useful for roles and processes where work happens in spreadsheets, email, browsers, and thick-client applications.
Tight UiPath platform integration
It fits into UiPath’s broader automation lifecycle by supporting automation discovery and feeding insights into downstream automation design and delivery. Organizations already standardizing on UiPath can reduce tool fragmentation across discovery and automation execution. This can streamline governance and handoffs between process analysts and automation developers.
Supports automation candidate selection
It helps prioritize automation opportunities by identifying repetitive patterns and common task variants across users. Teams can use the captured evidence to validate feasibility and define automation requirements. This can improve the quality of automation backlogs compared with relying only on interviews and workshops.
Privacy and change management needs
Capturing user desktop activity can raise employee privacy, works council, and compliance concerns depending on jurisdiction and policy. Deployments typically require clear consent, data minimization, and strong governance to avoid misuse. These requirements can slow rollout compared with approaches based only on system event logs.
Coverage depends on instrumentation
Task mining requires installing and managing capture components on user endpoints and selecting representative user groups. If participation is limited or the sample is biased, results may not reflect true process variability. Endpoint constraints (VDI, locked-down devices, or restricted environments) can also reduce data quality or feasibility.
Not a full process mining substitute
Task-level capture does not replace end-to-end process mining based on enterprise event logs for system-of-record visibility and conformance at scale. Organizations often still need complementary process mining to quantify throughput, bottlenecks, and variants across entire processes. Using task mining alone can overemphasize local desktop steps without full upstream/downstream context.
