What is Google Cloud VM Migration
Google Cloud VM Migration is a Google Cloud service for migrating virtual machines from on-premises environments and other clouds into Google Cloud Compute Engine. It supports lift-and-shift style migrations and can be used by infrastructure and cloud operations teams to move workloads with minimal application changes. The service focuses on orchestrating VM replication, cutover, and validation within Google Cloud, and it integrates with Google Cloud networking, IAM, and monitoring for operational control.
Native Google Cloud integration
The service integrates directly with Google Cloud IAM, VPC networking, and Compute Engine, which simplifies access control and target-environment configuration. It fits organizations standardizing on Google Cloud operations tooling for logging and monitoring. This reduces the need to stitch together separate migration utilities and cloud-side management components.
Purpose-built VM lift-and-shift
It is designed specifically for VM migrations, including replication and cutover workflows into Compute Engine. This focus can make it easier to plan and execute infrastructure moves compared with general file-transfer or SaaS-to-SaaS migration tools. It aligns well with rehosting scenarios where applications remain largely unchanged.
Supports phased migration execution
VM Migration supports running migrations in stages (replication, testing/validation, and cutover), which helps teams reduce downtime risk. This approach supports wave-based migrations across multiple applications and environments. It also enables repeatable processes for moving groups of VMs as part of a broader cloud adoption program.
Not a data integration platform
Despite being used in migration projects, it is not a general-purpose data integration tool for ETL/ELT, API-based integration, or ongoing synchronization across applications. Teams needing cross-system data pipelines typically require separate integration services. This limits its fit for use cases labeled as "cloud data integration" beyond VM replication.
Google Cloud destination focus
The service is oriented around migrating into Google Cloud Compute Engine rather than providing a vendor-neutral destination layer. Organizations pursuing multi-cloud portability may need additional tooling and processes for migrations to other targets. This can increase complexity for heterogeneous cloud strategies.
Requires cloud migration expertise
Successful migrations still depend on network design, identity/access setup, OS and application compatibility checks, and cutover planning. Teams without established migration runbooks may face longer implementation timelines. Operational readiness tasks (monitoring, backup, security baselines) remain largely the customer’s responsibility.
Plan & Pricing
| Plan | Price | Key features & notes |
|---|---|---|
| Migrate to Virtual Machines | $0 (service provided at no charge) | Migration service is provided at no charge for migrations into Google Cloud. Customers are charged for underlying Google Cloud resources consumed for testing/validation and after migration (Compute Engine VMs, Persistent Disk, Storage, Networking). Migrations from AWS/Azure may incur costs on the source cloud for launched instances, disks, and network traffic. Paid support is available; use the Google Cloud Pricing Calculator for estimates. |
