What is Google Datastream
Google Datastream is a managed change data capture (CDC) and replication service in Google Cloud that streams data from operational databases into analytics destinations such as BigQuery and Cloud Storage. It is used by data engineering and analytics teams to build near-real-time pipelines for reporting, warehousing, and downstream processing. The product focuses on low-operations replication with built-in monitoring and integration with Google Cloud services rather than providing third-party business datasets.
Managed CDC replication service
Datastream provides a managed approach to capturing database changes and replicating them to Google Cloud destinations. This reduces the need to operate and scale custom CDC infrastructure. It supports continuous ingestion patterns that are commonly required for near-real-time analytics and operational reporting.
Tight Google Cloud integration
Datastream integrates directly with Google Cloud services, particularly BigQuery, which simplifies landing and analyzing replicated data. It fits well into Google Cloud IAM, networking, and monitoring practices. For teams standardizing on Google Cloud, this can reduce integration work compared with assembling multiple third-party components.
Supports incremental data pipelines
By streaming changes rather than repeatedly extracting full tables, Datastream can lower data movement and processing overhead for many workloads. This approach helps keep analytical stores more current without frequent batch jobs. It is well-suited to building incremental ELT/ETL patterns in cloud data platforms.
Not third-party data provider
Despite being listed under DaaS, Datastream does not supply external datasets such as company, contact, web, or location intelligence. It primarily moves a customer’s own data from source systems to Google Cloud. Buyers seeking packaged data enrichment or market intelligence typically need separate data providers.
Google Cloud destination focus
Datastream is designed around Google Cloud destinations and operational patterns. Organizations with multi-cloud data platforms or non-Google primary warehouses may find it less aligned than vendor-neutral replication options. This can increase architectural complexity if the target environment is not centered on Google Cloud.
Source and feature constraints
Supported sources, regions, and advanced replication needs (for example, complex transformations, broad connector coverage, or specialized governance features) may require additional tooling. Teams often still need complementary orchestration, transformation, and data quality products to complete end-to-end pipelines. Fit depends on the specific database sources and downstream requirements.
Plan & Pricing
Pricing model: Pay-as-you-go Free tier/trial: Backfill — first 500 GiB per month free. New Google Cloud customers may be eligible for the $300 free trial credits that can be applied to Datastream usage. Example costs (USD, per gibibyte, per month/account unless noted):
- CDC (Change Data Capture) tiered pricing:
- 0–2,500 GiB: $2.00 per GiB
- 2,500–5,000 GiB: $1.50 per GiB
- 5,000–10,000 GiB: $1.20 per GiB
- 10,000 GiB and above: $0.80 per GiB
- Backfill (historical snapshot):
- First 500 GiB per month: $0.00 (free)
- Above 500 GiB: $0.40 per GiB
Notes & limits:
- Events read but not written to the destination aren’t counted for billing.
- Datastream charges are for data processed by Datastream only; additional Google Cloud services used (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Dataflow, networking, etc.) are billed separately.
- Contact sales for pricing beyond 10 TB (CDC).
