What is Remote Desktop Services

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a Microsoft Windows Server role that enables users to access Windows desktops and applications remotely over the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). It is commonly used by IT teams to publish session-based desktops, deliver RemoteApp applications, and centralize desktop access for employees and contractors. RDS typically runs on customer-managed infrastructure (on-premises or in IaaS) and integrates with Windows/Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft licensing models.

pros

Native Windows Server integration

RDS is built into Windows Server and aligns with common Microsoft enterprise components such as Active Directory, Group Policy, and Windows authentication. This reduces the need for separate remote-access agents in many Windows-centric environments. It also supports publishing either full desktops or individual RemoteApp applications from centralized servers.

Session-based multi-user delivery

RDS supports multiple concurrent user sessions on a single server, which can be cost-effective for shared application delivery. It is well-suited for line-of-business apps that run reliably in a server-hosted session model. Administrators can scale using collections and multiple session hosts, depending on the deployment design.

Broad client and protocol support

RDS uses RDP, which is widely supported across Windows and available via Microsoft clients for macOS, iOS, Android, and web access options depending on configuration. This can simplify end-user access compared with tools that require proprietary clients. RDP also supports features such as clipboard, printer redirection, and drive mapping when enabled by policy.

cons

Complex architecture and licensing

RDS deployments often require multiple roles and components (e.g., Gateway, Broker, Web Access, Licensing) that increase design and operational complexity. Licensing typically involves Windows Server plus RDS Client Access Licenses (CALs), and may require careful compliance management. High availability and external access scenarios add additional configuration and infrastructure requirements.

Security depends on configuration

Exposing RDP directly to the internet is widely discouraged; secure deployments generally require RD Gateway, MFA integration, and strict network controls. Misconfiguration can increase risk, and patching cadence for Windows Server remains an ongoing operational requirement. Organizations may need additional tooling for monitoring, privileged access controls, and session auditing beyond baseline capabilities.

Limited built-in support workflows

RDS focuses on delivering remote desktops and apps rather than technician-led support workflows. Capabilities commonly expected in dedicated support tools—such as lightweight ad-hoc sessions, technician ticketing integration, unattended endpoint management, and granular support reporting—are not core features. Many teams supplement RDS with separate ITSM, endpoint management, or remote support products.
