What is Shopify Plus
Shopify Plus is an enterprise-tier e-commerce platform used to build and operate online storefronts, manage product catalogs, orders, payments, and integrations. It targets high-volume and multi-brand merchants that need scalable commerce operations and support for international selling. The platform combines hosted storefronts with an app ecosystem, APIs, and automation tools, and it can extend to in-person retail through Shopify POS and channel integrations.
Enterprise-grade hosted commerce
Provides a fully hosted commerce stack that reduces the need for merchants to manage infrastructure, upgrades, and security patching. Supports high order volumes and multi-store setups commonly used by larger brands. Includes platform-level features such as checkout customization options (within Shopify’s framework), automation, and dedicated support resources typical of enterprise plans.
Large integration ecosystem
Offers a broad app marketplace and partner ecosystem for marketing, fulfillment, customer service, analytics, and B2B extensions. Provides APIs (including Admin and Storefront APIs) that enable custom integrations with ERP, PIM, and other back-office systems. This ecosystem can shorten implementation time compared with building equivalent functionality from scratch.
Omnichannel and POS options
Extends beyond online storefronts to support in-person selling via Shopify POS and integrations to external marketplaces and social channels. Centralizes product, inventory (with configuration), and order data across channels to support unified operations. This helps retailers that need a single commerce platform for both digital and physical touchpoints.
Platform constraints and lock-in
Merchants operate within Shopify’s hosted architecture, which limits deep server-side customization compared with self-hosted or fully composable approaches. Checkout and core commerce flows are customizable but still constrained by Shopify’s rules, APIs, and plan entitlements. Migrating away can be complex due to theme/app dependencies and data model differences.
Costs can scale quickly
Total cost often includes the Plus subscription, payment processing fees, and recurring costs for apps, themes, and agency development. Some advanced capabilities (e.g., B2B workflows, multi-entity operations, complex promotions) may require additional apps or custom development. For global or multi-brand deployments, ongoing operational costs can increase as stores and integrations expand.
Not a full ERP suite
Shopify Plus focuses on commerce execution rather than end-to-end ERP functions such as advanced financials, manufacturing, or complex supply chain planning. Many enterprise deployments require integrations with external systems for accounting, procurement, and master data management. Integration work can add implementation time and introduce operational dependencies on third-party vendors.
